Tues 17th April 2010 - Trying to get back on the road -1

Today's Lesson: Stuff happens !

<--  Back of Pottsville Beach, Northern NSW

Someone pointed out to me by email that the site looked "way out of date" --- and I realised how long it is since I posted.  You must all be wondering what the heck happened?  Short version --- the Verada's gearbox gave out at Sheba dams and my son very kindly towed us back to the Central Coast and our wonderful second family - the Oslingtons.

I mention the following as a public service for everyone who has a 1998-2001 Mitsubishi Verada.  I found nothing about it on the net, and it cost us an absolute fortune to find out that a Mitsubishi Verada's gearbox stops working (goes into "default" mode i.e. 3rd and reverse ONLY) when the reversing light fuse blows.  No, I'm serious!  Really!

First mechanic said it was the gearbox.  Wyong Automatic Transmission Service charged us a couple of hundred to diagnose the computer was dead and wanted $1500 - $3000 to repair it.  This sent us on a very traumatic couple of weeks to other mechanics and to trying to find another solution because we didn't have that much money.   We ordered a secondhand computer from the Gold Coast and John fitted it when it arrived.  Same Problem!! No change!!

John was wonderful.  He didn't give up.  But finally, my son Chris happened to ask a mechanic near his house about it, and he said, "check if the tail lights are working".  My son was almost too embarrassed to suggest it because it sounded so ridiculous!  Guess what!  They weren't and John replaced the fuse and the gear box came back!!  Then we sat around in shock looking at the mechanic bills and the assorted parts we'd bought on their advice and just shook our heads.  Live and learn.

Day 39 - Wed 23rd Dec 2009 - Staying with Deb & Russell - Mel's parents

Today's Lesson: Mel's Mum and Dad are lovely!

<--  Watagans State Forest near the Central Coast

We left the beautiful State Forest this morning - pretty sad to be going.  The quiet, the solitude, the bush animals and birds -- all seem like old friends now.  We're heading off to Mel's Mum and Dad's house near The Entrance to be closer to everyone for the big Christmas day/s!  We drove through Budgewoi on our way down, and it really impressed us.  It's definitely the most "original" of the Central Coast.  The houses are older style (and older!) and the people are friendly.  There was even a park beside the river that wasn't NO NO NO singposted!  Heaven.  We stopped to give the cat and dog a break and had a bite of lunch before heading onto Deb and Russell's house. Deb's wonderful. {readmorelink} Click to Continue...

Day 36 - Sun 19th Dec 2009 - Watagans - The Pines Campground

Today's Lesson: More wonderful family time with Bella and Hannah!

<--  Watagans State Forest near the Central Coast

We spent a lovely afternoon with Chris and his wife Mel and my two grandchild, Bella(2) and Hannah (10mths).  This visit is the first time I’ve seen Hannah – and she’s the spitting image of Chris as a baby – and me, for that matter.

I won’t bore you with family details except to say that I am so proud of the way these guys are raising their children!  I wish all children in the world could be brought up with the love and attention that these two receive. Bella, the two year old speaks unbelievably well and is tall for her age, so I have to keep reminding myself that she's two and not 3 or 4.

My other grandson Kaylan is still up north with his dad, Rob, and I've been missing them terribly since we left, but I guess you can't be in two places at once! <--  Watagans State Forest near the Central Coast

There might still be a lot of gold and saphires in the hills, but they're hiding in a whole LOT MORE dirt!

Day 35 - Sat 19th Dec 2009 - Watagans - Olney State Forest Camp

Today's Lesson: Boys and their mechanical toys.  Sheesh!!

<--  Watagans near the Central Coast

A family arrived at our camping area this morning and we breathed a sigh of relief.  It's easier to leave the van when there's more people around - especially a family - and we want to get into town to see my son Chris, so it was a huge relief when they set up.

Until their teenage boys brought out the - you guessed it - motorcycles!  Hopefully they'll get it out of their systems whilst we're down in town.

I know I can't pray for an accident, but would it be so awful to pray for mass mechanical failure!{readmorelink} Click to Continue...
